Microsoft Clarity Review

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 5/5

One of the best tools on the market, and totally free. We highly recommend you add this to your site.

This Clarity review is based on extensive use in a real business environment. How easy is it to get started and should you install it on your website/app?

What is Microsoft Clarity?

Clarity is Microsoft's free behaviour analytics tool. It shows you how people actually use your site through session recordings, click and scroll heatmaps and, more recently, AI generated summaries of what's happening on your pages.

The headline feature is the price. Clarity is completely free with no traffic caps, no sampling and no forced upgrade path.

Microsoft says the platform processes more than a petabyte of data from over 100 million users a month, and every one of those sites gets the same unlimited access.

For early career marketers or anyone running a site on a tight budget, that's a genuinely rare thing in this category.

Core features include:

  • Session recordings with automatic flagging of rage clicks, dead clicks, quick backs and excessive scrolling
  • Click and scroll heatmaps
  • AI generated summaries and an AI chat tool for asking questions about your data
  • Dashboards for Google Analytics and Google Ads data alongside Clarity's own metrics

How easy is it to install Clarity?

Installation is straightforward whichever route you take. Microsoft provides direct plugins for WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace, so if your site runs on one of those you're a few clicks away from live data.

If you use Google Tag Manager, Clarity has its own template to speed up setup. Failing that, you can paste the tracking script directly into the head section of your site's HTML, or install it as an NPM package if you're working in a JavaScript framework.

There's also a growing set of mobile SDKs covering Android, iOS, Flutter and React Native, so app based products aren't left out.

Once the code is live, data starts flowing immediately. You can watch real time recordings and see a live visitor count on your dashboard within seconds of adding the script, rather than waiting hours for anything meaningful to appear.

Getting started with Clarity

The dashboard is clean and doesn't take long to learn. As well as the default Clarity view, you can switch to dedicated dashboards for Advertising and Google Analytics once those integrations are connected, and an Agent Performance view for tracking how AI agents and bots interact with your content.

Cards on the dashboard can be reordered, hidden or set to a preferred default tab, and a Watchlist feature lets you pin the segments, custom tags or labels you care about most so you don't have to dig for them every time you log in.

Session recordings

Wading through hundreds of recordings used to be a chore, but Clarity's filters make it easy to strip out bounces and non-engaged sessions before you start watching.

Recordings highlight clicks and scrolls as they happen, and Clarity automatically tags notable moments for you.

Rage clicks, dead clicks, quick backs and excessive scrolling are all flagged without any setup, which makes it far faster to spot where people are getting frustrated rather than scrubbing through every session manually. You can also drill into device, OS and location detail for each recording.

If you're wary of capturing sensitive input, Clarity lets you control how aggressively text is masked before it's sent to Microsoft's servers, and the platform is built to be GDPR and CCPA ready by default.

Click and scroll heatmaps

The click heatmap does what you'd expect, showing you the parts of a page people interact with most.

Clarity breaks this down further into dead clicks, rage clicks, first clicks and last clicks, so you can tell the difference between genuine engagement and people clicking on something that doesn't actually respond.

Scroll heatmaps show how far down a page visitors typically get before leaving. It's consistently one of the more humbling reports to run, since it's common to find that carefully written copy further down the page is only ever seen by a fraction of visitors.

AI summaries and AI chat

This is the biggest change since Clarity's early days.

Rather than only handing you raw heatmaps and recordings, the dashboard now includes AI generated summaries that pull out actionable takeaways in one click, plus an AI chat tool you can use to ask direct questions about your data and get an answer based on what Clarity has actually recorded.

For anyone short on time, this turns a slow manual review process into something closer to a quick daily check in.

Filters and segments

Clarity's filters let you slice any report by a long list of criteria, including:

  • Device category
  • Browser
  • Operating system
  • Country
  • User actions
  • Page scroll depth
  • Goals reached or not reached
  • Entry, exit and visited URL
  • Referring site
  • Session duration

You can save any combination of filters as a segment so you're not rebuilding the same view every time, and pin your most used segments and custom tags to the Watchlist for quick access.

Recording data is retained for 30 days, which is a meaningful improvement on what the platform originally offered.

Favourited recordings and a random sample of sessions are kept for up to nine months, and heatmap data is retained for up to nine months too, so longer term trend analysis is possible even on a free tool.

How does Clarity compare to Contentsquare (previously named Hotjar)?

The obvious comparison is Contentsquare, which offers similar heatmaps and recordings but charges once you go past a fairly low session limit.

Clarity's total lack of traffic caps makes it the stronger choice for smaller sites, side projects and anyone who wants to run analytics on every visitor rather than a sampled subset.

Where Contentsquare still has an edge is in extras like on site surveys and feedback widgets, which Clarity doesn't offer. If you only need to understand behaviour rather than collect direct visitor feedback, Clarity covers the core use case without the price tag.

Community and support

Since Clarity is free, don't expect live human support if something goes wrong.

Microsoft does maintain thorough documentation covering setup, features and troubleshooting, and the Clarity blog is worth following for new feature announcements, since the product has moved on considerably even in the last year or two.

Final thoughts

Clarity has grown from a solid free alternative to Contentsquare into a genuinely capable behaviour analytics platform, and the fact that it's still completely free with no traffic limits makes it hard to fault. The addition of AI summaries and AI chat means you no longer need hours spare to get value out of it either.

If you have a site of any size and haven't installed it yet, there's no real reason not to. The only real cost is your own time spent acting on what it shows you.
